What are Globe Valves?

Thus, any fluid flow is diverted into a pipe at a right angle to the pipeline direction before it can proceed on its downstream path.

The operation for all globe valves is generally identical. The primary factor is their orientation, which determines the direction of the fluid. In most cases, the safest and most efficient orientation is the upward flow. This allows any gravitational force by the fluid to aid the closing mechanism instead of impeding it.

  • The Body – It contains the primary fluid area. It is the most robust part, designed to handle any pressure exerted on the valve.
  • The Bonnet – This component provides a leakproof closure for the valve body.
  • The Disc – It does the primary sealing against the valve seat. It connects to the stem.
  • The Stem – Connects the disc to either a handwheel or actuating mechanism outside the valve. It helps in moving the disc at right angles to the plane of the seat.
  • The Handwheel – Serves as a manual actuator for the valve.

Globe valves are popular in applications requiring throttling and frequent operation. For instance, steam systems often utilize globe valves. Because of their ability to cut through liquids, they are ideal for liquid, gas, and steam services.

Valves Maintenance & Leakage

Maintenance and detection of leakage for the globe valve are crucial. Regular maintenance helps keep the valves functional and detect any form of wear and tear. Leakage of the valves can be observed in the disc, the seat, or the stuffing box, mostly due to improper positioning or wear and tear. Leakage in the valves causes inefficiency in the operation and could potentially lead to fluid or gas loss.
